25 Republican AGs sue Biden administration over ESG pension scheme

The Republican attorneys general of 25 U.S. states have filed a lawsuit against the Biden administration’s plan to empower pension fund managers to make “socially conscious” investment decisions.

The federal lawsuit filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for North Texas seeks to stop implementation of the Department of Labor’s rule that allows private benefit plans to invest in funds that target environmental, social or governance issues (ESG).

The lawsuit alleges that the new rule “undermines key retirement savings protections for 152 million workers…a total of $12 trillion in assets” in the name of social policy, including tackling climate change.

The rule, which takes effect Jan. 30, reverses a restriction imposed during the Trump administration that requires retirement plans to consider only financial factors when making investment decisions and exercising shareholder rights.

“The Biden administration is promoting its climate change agenda by endangering ordinary people’s retirement money,” Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes, who is presiding over the lawsuit, said in a statement to DailyMail.com.

Robot Cars Are Causing 911 False Alarms in San Francisco

Category:

For some residents of San Francisco, the robotic future of driving is just a tap away. Ride-hailing services from GM subsidiary Cruise and Alphabet company Waymo allow them to summon a driverless ride with an app. But some riders have become perhaps too comfortable with the technology.

In a letter filed with a California regulator yesterday, city agencies complained that on three separate occasions since December, Cruise staff called 911 after a passenger in one of its driverless vehicles became “unresponsive” to the two-way voice link installed in each car. Each time, police and firefighters rushed to the scene but found the same thing: a passenger who had fallen asleep in their robot ride.

The agencies’ letter complains that the incidents wasted public money and potentially diverted resources from people truly in need. “Taxpayer funded emergency response resources used for nonemergencies undermine their availability to members of the public in true nee[d],” wrote the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, the San Francisco County Transportation Authority, and the Mayor’s Office on Disability.

The letter was one of a series sent to the California Public Utilities Commission this week by transportation officials in San Francisco and Los Angeles seeking to pump the brakes on Cruise and Waymo’s requests to expand their paid robotaxi services in both cities. The cities say they’re worried the technology isn’t ready. And they want the companies to be required to share more data about the performance of their cars, and meet specific benchmarks, before service can be expanded.

BEIJING — People in China are moving past the pandemic and going out to travel, preliminary data for the Lunar New Year holiday show.

“Pent-up demand is being released as many people rush to scenic spots, watch firework shows and crowd into restaurants and hotels,” Nomura’s chief China economist Ting Lu said in a report Thursday.

China’s Covid “exit wave” is quickly ending as official data show a drop in infections, hospitalizations and deaths, he said. “China has been rapidly reaching its Covid herd immunity, as the government estimates about 80% of the population has already been infected with Covid.”

The country saw a surge in Covid infections in December, just as Beijing ended nearly three years of stringent contact tracing and border controls. The seven-day Lunar New Year, which officially began Saturday, is the first major holiday since the end of China’s Covid restrictions.

Within the country, reservations for stays at bed and breakfasts more than doubled from a year ago, while ticket sales for attractions grew by more than fivefold, according to Trip.com

The travel booking site claimed that for those four days, reservations for hotels and other tourist activities exceeded levels seen for the same period in 2019, before the pandemic.

Woke on Steroids: Vanderbilt University Prof Claims Math is Racist White Supremacy and Anti-Gay

Remember when we used to hear professors and scientists talk about how math was the universal language of the universe? It used to be that mathematics was the same regardless of your socioeconomic background, native language, or hell, even the time in history you were born.

It’s what people much smarter than us used to label wertfrei – it’s amoral, neutral, universal; value-free.

Not anymore! Now the field, or should I say practicum since ‘field’ is considered “insensitive” to say as it harkens back to the days of slaves working the fields of mathematics, is drenched in the terrible shade of white.

That’s right, boys and girls, math is white supremacy.

I’ve written about many things that I find absolutely ridiculous, but this might take the cake.

The best part is that a Vanderbilt professor who recently spouted such nonsense, combined with a whole bunch of other random imagined transgressions for the field of mathematics, proves that the downfall of civilization might very well be our collective stupidity versus the assumed inevitable nuclear apocalypse.

Column-Pound faces mid-Atlantic as markets eye BOE blink :Mike Dolan

Category:

By Mike Dolan

LONDON (Reuters) - Whatever new year fillip the euro zone economy got from ebbing natural gas prices, the UK saw none of it - showing just how peculiarly British the downturn there has become and heaping pressure on the Bank of England.

January business surveys from around the world on Tuesday saw euro zone economic activity expanding again for the first time since June - helped by an unusually warm winter that's seen more than a halving of sky-high natural gas prices over the past six weeks.

Although Britain saw the same easing of wholesale energy prices, UK industry - by stark contrast - continued to contract this month. In fact it shrank at its fastest pace in two years, with everything from inflation and rising interest rates to worker shortages, serial labour strikes and mounting Brexit damage being blamed. Sterling suffered its biggest one-day drop against the euro on Tuesday in over a month.

And even if you think surveys can be wayward from time to time, the Confederation of British Industry's poll of manufacturers doubled down on the message and showed order books weakening further this month despite an easing of cost pressures.

Whatever the precise reason for the persistent gloom, it leaves the central bank in a pickle as it tries to rein in still double-digit inflation and record private sector pay growth without sinking the housing-sensitive economy even deeper into the mire.

The BoE meets again next week and there are growing calls for it start to wind up its year-long campaign of interest rate hikes that have already brought its main policy rate to 3.5% from just 0.1% in December 2021.
