If you’re thinking about starting a small business anytime in the near future, you’re going to need customers. And, to get these customers, you’re going to need a plan.

So, how do you find these customers, or, to be more precise, how do you attract these customers to your business? 
Marketing: this is one very important area that you cannot afford to not spend money on. 
In this article, we’ll discuss the basics of marketing and how you can put your new business front and center in the minds of your customers. 
1. Flyering 
If you want to reach a large audience, go and stand in a large crowd and reach out to them one-by-one. 
Handing out flyers is a tried-and-tested approach in getting new customers through your doors. 
Create professionally printed flyers using these flyer templates. Make sure that you get plenty printed out. 
You’ll need to get permission from the landowner before you start handing out your flyers, and you should make sure that you don’t give up easily. Some people will push your flyer away, but don’t get disheartened. If five percent of your flyers attract customers, then you’ve been successful. 
2. Billboard Ad
Look out on the main road near you at any one time, how many cars pass down every minute of every day. Now think about how many people drive down that road every day, week, and month. 
Billboard advertising is a great way of attracting the attention of passers-by. One of the best things about it is that it can be quite cost-effective. 
Remember that our billboard needs to be kept simple and straightforward. It should be easy for drivers to read and take it. Use bold images and short, easy-to-read text that gets straight to the point. You’ll only have a split second to make an impact. 
Think about how long the billboard will be up for, and how long the lead time from order to seeing your ad in position are. Timely ads might not work so well, so try a more general approach. 
3. Sponsorship
A major opportunity for your business to attract new customers is going to be through sponsorship. 
Find a local event that needs money, and in return you’ll get your branding and messages displayed in prominent positions throughout the event. 
Speak with the event planners and make sure that your advertising and branding gets the prime position. If possible, have your name and products mentioned throughout the event in speeches.  If you are able, see if you can sell or promote your products directly at the event with a stand. 
You will, of course, need to make sure that you are getting a return on your investment. One way that you can do this is would be to run a promotion aimed at event-goers. Give them all a code or a voucher that they can redeem. The more of these that you see coming back, the more effective the event will have been for you.
