5 Reasons to Care About Your Eye Health

Paying attention to our eye health is one of those things that sometimes gets pushed aside in our busy lives. However, here are five reasons why you should take a proactive stance and care about your eye health.

Reason #1 – You Could Reduce Your Risk for Some Eye Problems

Eating a healthy diet loaded with antioxidants could help reduce your risk from developing some eye conditions, including cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Dark leafy greens are at the top of the list of foods that are great for your eye health, but you can also enjoy other foods that are high in:

  • Vitamins C & E
  • Zinc
  • Lutein and Zeaxanthin
  • Omega-3 fatty acids

Reason #2 – You May Notice Changes in Your Vision Quicker

When you pay more attention to your eyes, you are more likely to be aware when your eye health is changing. Fuzzy vision or squinting are signs that it could be time to get a new eyeglass prescription. Dry or irritated eyes could alert you to eye strain from too much screen time and it is time to take a break.

Reason #3 – You Could Avoid Injuries that Cause Permanent Eye Damage

It is important to protect your eyes from injuries that could permanently damage your eyes. If you play sports, make sure to wear the proper eyewear to avoid injuries. But also remember that everyday activities like going outdoors, cleaning your home, or doing yard work put your eyes at risk too. When outdoors, remember to wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays to protect your vision. Protective goggles will help keep your eyes save from flying debris and cleaners when working around your home.

Reason #4 – Maintaining Your Eye Health Helps You Maintain Your Independence Longer

Taking steps now to maintain your eye health will help you maintain your independence longer as you get older. Poor vision will limit your independence and make it more difficult to do the things you enjoy and have the freedom that so many of us take for granted with being able to drive, walk freely, and other activities that require good vision.

Reason #5 – Keeping Up with Eye Exams Can Catch Eye Problems Early

By not skipping your yearly eye exam, your eye doctor can catch eye problems that might not be noticeable to you. Early detection allows for earlier treatment and better outcomes for patients. Do not put off your eye exam – contact Valley Eyecare Center at (602) 955-2700 to schedule your next eye exam.
